PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) - Approximately 700 people ran and hundreds more gathered around Portland's Back Cove to raise proceeds for the One Fund Boston charity 5K.

Amongst those on hand were Falmouth resident Sarah Girouard, was one of the victims the Boston Marathon bombings.  She was in attendance to support her sister and the other participants, as well as taking another step in her healing process.  She expects to be fully recovered from her shrapnel wounds in about four weeks.

Also in attendance was 1983 Boston Marathon winner and highly accomplished distance runner Joan Benoit Samuelson.  The 1984 Olympic gold medalist has since traveled the country on speaking engagements and spoke about the massive support and empathy for those in Boston.

The event sponsored by the Maine Runners Company raised about $14,000 for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Similar 5K events have been held nationwide and to date they've collectively raised more than $1.5 million dollars.
