FALMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - State police say a Falmouth man has been arrested and charged with murder following a standoff that lasted several hours Friday.
State police say 44-year-old Andrew Leighton was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of his mother at their home on Edgewater Drive.
Police found the body of Leighton's mother, who has been identified as 68-year-old Shirley Leighton, inside the home on Edgewater Drive where the standoff occurred. An autopsy will take place Sunday at the State Medical Examiner's office in Augusta.
Andrew Leighton was charged early Saturday morning following his release from Maine Medical Center where he was taken for an evaluation. He was taken into custody around 11 p.m. Friday after he surrendered to police. Leighton is being held at the Cumberland County Jail without bail.
Police say the shooting was reported to police by 71-year-old Thomas Leighton, who discovered the shooting after returning home from walking his dog in the neighborhood Friday afternoon.
After police arrived on scene, Andrew Leighton barricaded himself inside the home. Police had closed off Route 88 while a tactical team was on scene during the standoff. Falmouth police were being assisted by the Cumberland County Sheriff's office, Yarmouth police and the Brunswick bomb squad.
Neighbors tell NEWS CENTER that Andrew Leighton lived in the home with his parents and had been drinking all day. They say he shot his mother, and when his father saw what happened he ran out of the home to get help. Neighbors say that Leighton then chased his father, but that he soon returned to the home.
State police detectives were at the home through the early morning hours Saturday, and are expected to return to the home later in the day with a search warrant to continue the investigation.
