AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Police say a 13-year-old boy is facing several charges following a high-speed chase in the Augusta area early Saturday morning.

The Kennebec County Sheriff's office said one of its deputies was on a routine patrol around 2:30 a.m. Saturday when he spotted a van in back of Nichol's Self Storage facility on Route 3 in South China.

As the deputy began to approach the vehicle, police said the driver sped away from the scene.  Police attempted to pull the driver over, but the car continued, picking up speed heading toward Augusta.

Over the course of the chase, police said speeds reached 75 mph, and the pursuit lasted for nearly eight miles.

Police said the driver finally pulled over after noticing a spike mat that had been set up by the Augusta Police Department.  There were two people in the car, and both were taken into custody.

Police said the driver was 13-years-old, and the passenger was his 14-year-old stepbrother, both from the Maine town, China.  Authorities said the car they were in belonged to their mother's boyfriend.  The 13-year-old was on probation for a previous unrelated burglary.

The teens were turned over to their mother after contact was made with the juvenile community control officer.

Police said a short time later, they came upon an altercation between the boys and the mother's boyfriend.  The man said the 13-year-old had assaulted him during an argument over the incident.

Police then arrested the 13-year-old boy after contact was made again with juvenile community control, and he was charged with violation of probation, eluding an officer, operating a vehicle without a license, and theft by unauthorized use of property.
