LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Two 12 year old boys are now facing separate charges of arson. One in connection with the fire on Monday, the other in connection with the fire on Friday. Detention hearings were held today for both of them.
While there was some confusion after the newspaper had reported that the two would be arraigned today in the District Court in Lewiston, the District Attorney says she had no intention of filing any formal petitions today. This was always only supposed to be a detention hearing.
The first 12 year old was arrested on Thursday and charged with arson for Monday's fire on Blake Street. We have chosen not to report his name because of his age.
The second was arrested on Saturday and charged with Friday night's arson fire.
We spoke to the aunt of the first 12 year old arrested. She doesn't believe that he's responsible for the fire. She says he lived in the building that fire started in and he's one of the nearly 200 now homeless.
Ami Riley says the nephew she knows is a good kid who would never seek out attention.
Both boys will be arraigned in the Maine District Court in Lewiston on may 13th at 1pm.
