PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Portland's school board has approved the city's first ever charter school.

In a unanimous vote, the school board approved a scaled back Baxter Academy for Technology and Science.

The original proposal called for 160 students. The final plan anticipates 130.

Charter schools are paid for with money from the state that follows the student. Opponents of charter schools worry that will mean a drop in funding for public schools.

Dropping enrollment from 160 to 130 students means a loss of about $300,000. The new plan accounts for that funding gap by cutting some teaching jobs and cutting managerial pay.

The school will also increase fundraising efforts.
