SOMERSWORTH, N.H. (NEWS CENTER) -- Police have arrested a 30-year-old man from Somersworth, N.H. in connection with the death of a 2-year-old boy Friday night.

In a news release from the New Hampshire Attorney General's office, authorities said Jared Pope has been charged with manslaughter.

Police responded to a 911 call at 5:48 p.m. Friday that was placed from apartment #2 at 231 High St. in Somersworth. When police arrived on scene, they said a 2-year-old boy was found to be in distress.

Police said the boy, who has been identified as Noah York, was taken to Wentworth Douglas Hospital and was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy conducted Saturday morning by the New Hampshire Medical Examiner concluded that York was smothered.

After further investigation, police determined that Pope had caused the child's death, and he was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Police aren't releasing any details about Pope's relationship to the child.

Pope is expected to be arraigned on the manslaughter charge Monday in the 7th Circuit Court-District Division in Dover, N.H.

The New Hampshire Attorney General's office, New Hampshire State Police, and the Somersworth Police Department are continuing the investigation.
