BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Volunteers are a vital part to the operation of every hospital. Tuesday the St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor said thank you to its own.
The hospital honored it's 83 volunteers with awards and certificates during a dinner and awards presentation. Last year the volunteers donated 126,930 hours of their time with as many as 36 years worth of service from some. Those volunteers donate that time to assisting hospital staff, patients and visitors, as well as fundraise. That help according to the hospital's CEO and President, Mary Prybylo, saves the hospital thousands of dollars each year while providing adequate service to patients.
"They're critical," said Prybylo. "They help us meet our mission in terms of how we serve our community. They're the spirit of this organization in so many ways."
The most hours donated by a single volunteer is 26,000.
