AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Republican Party chairman Richard Cebra has stepped down after six months on the job.

Republican Party Executive Director Jason Savage told the Portland Press Herald that Cebra resigned Wednesday for personal reasons. He said the party would have no further comment.

Former state Treasurer Bruce Poliquin says he's considering the chairman post after being approached by a number of people asking him to take the job.

Cebra's resignation follows a tumultuous legislative session marked by tensions between GOP Gov. Paul LePage and some Republican legislators, who helped Democrats override his veto of the state budget.
