WINTER HARBOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- A Sumner Memorial High School senior wants to save a part of Downeast history. 16 year old Jasper Sheehan is looking for veterans and others who have a history with the former Navy base on the Schoodic Peninsula in Winter Harbor.

As part of his summer internship at the Schoodic Institute-- Jasper is seeking those in the community who worked, lived or have some connection to the former Naval base. The Naval Security Group Activity Winter Harbor operated from 1935 until it was closed in 2002. After it closed a lot of the Navy personnel moved away, taking their memories of the base with them.

Sheehan said, "I want to get involved because it's very important to keep the history of this place alive. It meant so much for so many people and it was their life and it affected this little town more than a lot of people realize. So, I want to make sure people understand the importance this base had. "

If you or someone you know would like to get involved in the project you can contact the Schoodic Institute or Email Jasper Sheehan at
