PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The city of Portland is cracking down on smokers who are not obeying a new ordinance banning smoking in city parks and squares.
Police cadets have been handing out information and writing up warnings for those they catch smoking in parks.
Public Services crews have also been hanging signs in areas that are now smoke free.
Police say for the most part the goal is spreading awareness about the new ordinance, but there is a hefty fine for those who refuse to obey; Cheif Michael Sauschuck says it starts at $100.
Two people have already been to court for not obeying the new ordinance, one more is scheduled in August.
