OAKLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- 43 year old Tara Mitchell has been training for 2 and a half years. On Friday night, her hard work will be put to the test in the 1st ever fight card on the Bangor Waterfront.
It's still pretty rare to see a women fighting in the ring. Tara says she still gets a few double-takes when people hear she's a mixed martial arts fighter. "Some people think it's really cool, some people are kind of like, why? So yeah, you get mixed reactions," says the Smithfield native.
Mitchell trains at Littlefield's Gym in Oakland, where she is coached by Wes Littlefield. He believes Mitchell is a trailblazer for women in the sport. "I think it's going to help pave the way for other girls that are kind of not sure what to expect," he says.
Mitchell works out with a lot of men, which she admits got her a little worried. But she says they've been nothing but supportive - which inspires her to compete.
"There are some very talented competitive women out there that are putting on some really exciting fights," she says, "I think it's great for the sport and I think it's great for women."
