AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Former Maine Senate President Rick Bennett has been elected chair of the Maine Republican Party.
The party's 77-person state committee elected Bennett the new chair in a vote Saturday morning.
The election followed the resignation of former Maine Republican Party Chair Richard Cebra earlier this month. The party said Cebra stepped down because of personal reasons.
Bennett is currently chair at Portland-based research firm GMI ratings and previously served as senate president in the state legislature.
"I'm honored to be elected, and anxious to get to work," Bennett said in a news release issued by the Maine Republican Party Saturday morning.
In addition to electing Bennett as party chair, the Maine Republican State Committee also elected former state representative and current Kennebec County Republican Chair Susan Morissette as new vice chair.
