ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Folks in the community of Ellsworth kicked off the first day of what is a week long celebration for the city's 250th birthday.
9 months of planning lead up to the sestercentennial celebration kick off that started with opening ceremonies on the steps of City Hall.
Several guests spoke including Senator Susan Collins at the event. Throughout the afternoon there was also a family fun day event at Knowlton park.
Everything from free ice cream, a bounce house, and train rides were available for kids to enjoy. According to one of the celebration's organizers, Thelma Beal, the 9 days of events aren't just a chance to get out and have some fun, but also an opportunity to reflect on how much the city has changed.
Ellsworth's sestercentennial celebration will run everyday this week wrapping up next Sunday July 28th.
