CASCO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A Massachusetts man was arrested for operating a golf cart under the influence of alcohol after his passenger was thrown from it and suffered serious injuries Saturday night.
In a news release, The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and Casco EMS said they were called to 261 Point Sebago Rd. in Casco Saturday around 10:30 p.m. for the report of a person who was thrown from a golf cart while it was in motion.
When police and rescue officials arrived on scene, they determined that the passenger, who has been identified as 52-year-old John MacKay from Sanford, sustained serious, life-threatening head injuries and was immediately taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Police determined during the initial stages of the investigation that the driver of the golf cart, who has been identified as 59-year-old Gary Belinsky from Westford, Mass., was operating under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and taken to Cumberland County Jail by sheriff's deputies. His bail has been set at $300 cash.
The crash remains under investigation.
