BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Bangor Public library is just shy of a million dollars away from it's fundraising goal to fix the historic buildings iconic copper roof. The Library needs to raise a total of 3 million dollars in order to receive a 3 million dollar matching grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation. In an effort to help reach that goal, the Bangor Art Society is doing something a little different with their annual paint out this year.
The money raised from this years paint out on September 7th is going to be benefiting the library to help them reach that goal. Artists from all over the state and of all skill sets are invited to the paint out in downtown bangor.
Artists are being asked to paint or draw a picture of an area of Bangor, while setting up those easles right downtown. Artists will have from 6 A.M. to 3 P.M. to put together their masterpiece, then those pieces of art will be auctioned off that night, as will other items that were donated by local businesses.
While this isn't the first time the downtown paint out has been held, this one will sure be a bit more special.
"This time we're trying to raise funds for our own library here to repair the roof. Our particular delight in doing that is the Bangor Art Society meets at the library every fourth Tuesday of the month and also has built up a very good art collection. It's our way of saying thank you to the library for what it does to the community and for us as an art society," said Bangor Art Society President Ulrike Guthrie.
"It's just about everything. This is not my income stream. I enjoy it and I usually do it in a beneficial cause so this feels really good for me to be able to contribute my time and my passion to something so worthwhile as the Bangor library," said local artist Carol Brooks.
You can register for the event easily online on the bangor public You can register for the event through the library's website. Registration is free for children and members of the Bangor Art Society, and will be $25 for non-members. They're hoping for not only a lot of artists to come out on September 7th, but a lot of bidders as well to try and raise as much money as they can to help reach that $3 million goal.
