YORK, Maine (AP) - Labor Day on the Maine Turnpike has featured heavy traffic and some wit and wisdom from the Farmers' Almanac.
The Maine Turnpike Authority teamed up with editors of the almanac to produce a special promotional edition that was handed out to motorists exiting the state on Monday. Miles the Moose, a man dressed in a moose costume, and turnpike staff handed out thousands of copies at the York Toll Plaza.
The almanac made headlines last week with its prediction of a cold winter and a stormy Super Bowl.
On Monday afternoon, state police reported bumper-to-bumper, stop-and-go traffic for the southern 20 miles of the turnpike. Turnpike officials say 17,480 southbound vehicles passed through the York Toll Plaza between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
