PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine's two U.S. senators say Bath Iron Works is still in the running for the contract to build a new round of cutters.

U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King said Tuesday that the Coast Guard has narrowed the number of shipyards competing for the contract from eight bids to five.

The two senators say BIW has the capacity to assemble ships the size and ruggedness of the Offshore Patrol Cutters and the workforce and track record needed to do the job.

The Coast Guard is expected to pick up to three preliminary designs early next year.

Construction of the ships is expected to start in fiscal year 2017.
