Owens was born on Sept. 12, 1913. By winning four gold medals in Germany, he undercut Hitler's claims of Nazi superiority.
But as mad as Hitler must have been, Adolf Dassler was every bit as happy for Owens. He's the German shoemaker who gave him his sneakers.
Dassler went by the nickname of Adi. He combined that with the first three letters of his last name to create the name of his company.
In giving a pair of shoes to Owens, Dassler struck what is believed to be the first sponsorship deal with an African-American athlete.
