ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Scientists and business leaders from the far east are in town this week to talk about the worldwide progress being made in harnessing tidal power.
The University of Maine is hosting the second annual Marine Energy International Symposium. About 11 people from Japan are attending the conference this week.
Researchers at U. Maine have been working with the Japanese delegation for the last few years. The university has also been assisting with a tidal research project going on in Cobscook Bay. Ocean Renewable Power Company is currently testing the power of the bay tides using equipment developed at U. Maine.
Organizers of the symposium say there are similar projects underway in Japan and the conference is a great way to see the progress both sides have made.
Ocean Renewable Power Company has already launched one test turbine into Cobscook Bay. Eventually the company hopes to place more off points farther north where the tidal energy is much stronger. The symposium at the university is taking place through Wednesday.
