SKOWHEGAN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Around 104 athletes took part in this years Special Olympics Maine Equestrian Competition.
As one of the largest events of its kind in the United States, athletes competed in 7 different events. Those included Showmanship, English and Western Equitation, Driving, Working Trail, Relays and Speed Barrels. Hilary Larochelle and her horse Mac were especially fond of the speed events.
"I think it's the running that's his favorite," said Larochelle about her Quarter Horse gelding.
The day was a friendly competition that riders were just happy to be a part of no matter their placing. Something Coach, Linda Mueller takes pride in as she watches her riders from the sidelines.
"It just helps their self esteem and you just get so excited and it's infectious. You can't help but be excited with them," said Mueller.
