GRAY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A tragic incident brought the homecoming events of a high school to an abrupt end Saturday afternoon.
Just before 1pm, as a boys' soccer game and a girls' field hockey game were being played on adjoining fields at Gray-New Gloucester High School, police say a 19-year old man shot himself in the parking lot near the southern end of a running track that surrounded the field hockey field. He died at the scene.
There were homecoming events going on, including face-painting and a bouncy house. But, SAD 15 Superintendent Bruce Beasley tells NEWS CENTER that the incident did not happen in plain sight of the crowds.
Everyone was asked to evacuate the fields and go home. All sporting events for the rest of the day were cancelled, including the night's homecoming dance.
Cumberland County Sheriff's captain, Shawn O'Leary says the young man had previously been in a relationship with one of the players on the field.
No one else was injured in the incident.
