PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Love it or hate it, The Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, is bringing some big changes to health insurance on Tuesday

People who don't currently have access to affordable insurance can go online and sign up through the Health Insurance Marketplace. With a few exceptions, if you don't have insurance by March 31, 2014, the government will give you a penalty, $95 for an adult, or 1% of your income, whichever is more.

If you currently are covered through MaineCare, Medicare or through your employer, you do not need to change your coverage.

Libby Cummings, an Outreach and Enrollment Specialist at the Portland Community Health Center has been talking people through some of their options for a month now. Tuesday, she'll be able to help sign people up, as she was trained by the federal government to do that.

Even though the penalty doesn't kick in until the end of March, Cummings says she's recommending to people that they sign up for insurance by December 15th, because that way they'll be covered right away in January.

"People shouldn't feel like they're pressed for time or anything. There's plenty of time to seek out resources and figure out eligibility and get help," Cummings said.
