(NEWS CENTER)-- Maine's commisioner of Health and Human Services says the State is appealing a decision by the federal government to cut $19,000,000 from a state-run psychiatric hospital.
Mayhew was notified on Thursday that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services plans to terminate funding for Riverview Psychiatric Center. The federal funds make up about half of the hospital's operating budget.
Riverview has been under review for weeks because of issues with overcrowding. Mayhew says she thought her people were addressing those problems and that the feds were fine with the changes.
Meanwhile, Mayhew says DHHS has put a Connecticut company on notice that the State may soon cancel it's contract to arrange rides to medical appointments under MaineCare.
NEWS CENTER spoke with Mayhew about both issues.
