AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The former executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine has filed paperwork to run for U.S. Senate.

Shenna Bellows tweeted a photo of herself Tuesday outside the Muskie Building in Augusta, declaring that she'd filed paperwork necessary to become a candidate. She intends to kick off her campaign later this month.

She'll be seeking the Democratic Party nomination to challenge three-term Republican incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.

The 38-year-old Bellows, an attorney from Manchester, resigned from the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine a little more than a week ago, saying she'd just gotten married and wanted to embark on a new adventure with her husband. Now it's clear that her adventure includes her first run for elected office.
