BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - It's been about a year since New Franklin Laundry on Fern street was torn down. The construction on the homes that will replace it now under way.
Six single family style homes will be built on the vacant lot, all with the most economical heating methods in mind. The style, known as Passive Homes, are built with 14 inch thick walls to keep the homes well insulated and virtually airtight. The idea behind that according to the developer on the project, Bob Kelly, is to save on home owners heating costs with the goal of eliminating any alternative heating sources down the road.
"It's just a much more comfortable house to live in and your cost from year to year are going to be much easier to calculate and control," said Kelly.
The first home is expected to be finished and on the market by next March.
