PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A 12-year old boy from New Vineyard is recovering from open heart surgery after he suddenly collapsed during football practice.

Tarek Haines was rushed to the hospital last Monday for what his family originally thought might be an asthma attack. After scans and MRIs doctors discovered that Tarek had a tumor attached to his heart. They also found that pieces of the tumor had broken off and migrated to Tarek's brain, causing at least 3 strokes.

Tarek's surgery was last Tuesday. Since then, his parents say his recovery has gone well, though he still struggles with double vision and balance.

Tarek has a long road ahead of him.  His mother, Charity, says he'll need scheduled MRIs and CTs to keep track of the pieces of tumor near his brain.  They'll also need to monitor his heart for a good part of his life.

The Haines say the community so far has been incredibly generous, donating money that has allowed them to stay by their son's side this entire week and a half.

However, Tarek's medical bills are expected to be enormous, and continue through the uncertainty of his future, so a fund has been set up for the family at the Bangor Savings Bank on Main Street in downtown Farmington.

Checks can be made payable to "The Tarek Haines Benefit Fund" and mailed to either: Bangor Savings Bank, PO Box 390, Farmington, ME 04938... or to Jim Martin Auto Sales, PO Box 407, Farmington, ME 04938.
