BRUNSWICK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Over the next 3 days, first responders from all over Maine, New England, even Canada and Montenegro, are taking part in a major disaster drill through US Northern Command and the Maine National Guard.

It's called Vigilant Guard 14, and it's the first drill of its kind in New England. The drill envisions a series of emergency situations that take place across the state during a major ice and snow storm. As the week goes on, the Maine National Guard is called in to help, as well as first responders from out of state.

Major Michael Steinbuchel of the Maine National Guard said, "Each one of these venues, each one of these incidents by itself might not be enough to call in the National Guard or call in assets from away, but because they're all happening simultaneously, because we have limited resources, it's realistic."

The idea is for agencies to get to know each other and work out any communication problems. It took a year to put the drill together.
