SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Red Cross is collecting holiday cards to send to veterans both here in the U.S. and abroad.
The Holiday Mail For Heroes Program has received and distributed more than 6.5 million cards for members of the armed forces and their families since 2006. Monday, shoppers at the Maine Mall took a few minutes out of their holiday shopping to stop and write down the messages they would like to send to veterans this holiday season. The cards will be distributed to troops serving overseas, as well as VA hospitals and other agencies that serve veterans.
The Mall is also doing a tribute for the troops during our holiday season with five trees, one for each branch of the armed forces. Each tree has ornaments with the insignia of that respective branch, and members of the public can write names of vets or military in their lives and hang them on the branch.
