FREEPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Officials with the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority say the Amtrak expansion to Freeport and Brunswick has been a huge success.
The train started travelling to those stops a little more than a year ago. And ridership has exceeded expectations.
The Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority reports about 52,000 people rode the train between Brunswick and Portland in its first year, which wrapped up October 31. Officials estimated that it would be about 36,000 people.
The Freeport Chamber of Commerce reports its members have seen a good boost in business, too. Amtrak would like to add another trip to Freeport and Brunswick in the next couple of years, but that depends on whether the passenger rail authority can get permission to build a facility to park the trains overnight.
