BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Bangor Police Department had a goal of filling an entire cop car with bags of pet food at the Shaw's parking lot in Bangor Saturday. They never imagined it would happen in less than an hour.

As part of the department's "Cops For A Cause" campaign, officers from the Bangor Police Department collected bags of pet food to go towards the Eastern Area Agency on Aging. The agencies Furry Friends Food Bank is in desperate need of donations for the pets of senior citizens they serve.

"Some seniors were feeding their pets before they fed themselves, or sharing their food with their pets and not getting enough nutrition," said Sgt. Catherine Rumsey. "We wouldn't want anyone to have to make those choices."

Several from the community stopped by to donate food to the event, including Donna Thompson who knows how expensive it is to try to take care of an animal.

"I spend about $75 a month on three dogs and so it is expensive," said Thompson.

Police collected 133 donations of pet food that will be distributed to the 439 Mainers who are signed up with the Furry Friends Food Bank.
