(NEWS CENTER) -- Over the last 24 hours, public works crews have been preparing their equipment to deploy on the roads.
In Portland, typically with a big storm like this there is some pretreatment to the roads with salt but because the temperature is well below freezing, salt won't do much good.
"We'll use a mix of some liquid calcium and some sand just to prepare," says Mike Bobinsky of Portland's Dept. of Public Services.
Crews spread the calcium and sand mixture on some hills and intersections throughout Portland in an effort to provide traction underneath vehicles. Bobinsky says they are preparing for weekend traffic despite the snow.
"We don't have the school issues, we don't have the commuting going on as much but there are some nightlife issues that we want to be sensitive of to make sure people can enjoy the city safely."
