Wintry weather battering northern New England

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The National Weather Service says up to 14 inches of snow could fall in Maine's coastal communities and heavy winds could make for near blizzard-like conditions before the storm moves out.

The Maine State Police requested speed restrictions for more than 100 miles of the Maine Turnpike because of the weather.

A winter storm warning is in effect for much of northern New England through Sunday afternoon. New Hampshire could also see more than a foot of snow, while 6 to 12 inches is expected in the central and northern mountains of Vermont.

Forecasters say the snow could mix with sleet before the storm winds down on Sunday.

The storm arrives as three more ski areas in Vermont and six more in Maine are opening.
