PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - With these bitter cold temperatures and the snow we received over the last several weeks it's a good idea to keep your roof clear of ice and snow.
Most Winters that's not a concern until later in the season, but the early season blast of wintery weather has kept workers at roofing companies very business this December.
"Very early start. We usually don't see this type of snow and build up on the roofs until later in January or February", said Ben Roper of Superior Roofing Company.
Roper says if you have 6-inches of snow or more on your roof you should clear it off. Eventually the heat inside your home will melt the snow, causing ice jams to form at the bottom. You can pay them a little now or a whole lot more later.
"You get ruined sheet rock, paint, i've had customers where it dripped down onto their bed, so it can be very traumatic when it happens. So basically if you keep the snow and ice off the roof that's one less thing you have to worry about", he said.
Most homeowners don't need professionals to take care of their Winter roof maintenance needs. You can invest a little money in a roof rake and stay on top of things after each storm.
