SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The city of South Portland got its first look Sunday at a massive school renovation project that was ten years in the making.
South Portland High School held an open house to celebrate the completion of phase one of the project. That first phase is a $47.5 million addition that was designed to change the learning experience. It includes a lecture hall, a new library known as the Learning Commons, new classrooms, a technology education room, and a robotics room. Science teacher Ryan Green says he thinks the new wing will encourage a new culture at the high school, where the students and teachers enjoy the learning experience more, because they enjoy the space.
"It's literally like everybody, teachers and students alike, just showed up in a new school," Green said. "I teach in a different school now. I don't teach at South Portland High School anymore. I teach at South Portland High School Two."
Phase two of the project will demolish and renovate parts of the original high school building. That phase is expected to be completed next year.
