BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The United States Coast Guard sent two ice breaking cutters to the Penobscot River in Bangor to alleviate the potential of ice jam flooding of the Kenduskeag Stream Saturday.

Petty Officer Kurt Hein of the United States Coast Guard Sector Northern New England in South Portland said two 65 foot cutters, the Bridle from Southwest Harbor and the Tackle from Rockland, started ice breaking in Bangor around noon Saturday.

Officials say that the two cutters plan on heading south to Rockland over the day and will break up any areas of ice as needed.
