PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- At the urging of State Police, The Maine Turnpike Authority has lowered the speed of the turnpike to 45 mph for the length of the highway, from Kittery to Augusta.
State police say they responded to a number of slide offs, mostly in southern maine and mostly earlier in the day. Reports of those minor accidents have since tapered off.
Similar story from york and cumberland county sheriff's departments. Cumberland county says the majority of the slide-offs were in the Gorham, Windham and Standish region. Cumberland County says now that crews are out on the roads reports of crashes are slowing considerably. Biddeford and Saco say they've also seen a number of slide offs but they're slowing as the day wears on.
All of the incidents were minor - there were no serious injuries.
