WINDSOR, Maine (AP) -- A Maine man accused of severely injuring his 6-month-old daughter last month has pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated assault and one count of assault.

Law enforcement officials say 21-year-old Kevin Peaslee shook the baby on Dec. 21, causing brain damage and blindness. Police say the baby is in grave condition at Maine Medical Center.

Peaslee entered the plea Monday via video link from the Kennebec County Jail.

The Kennebec Journal quoted District Attorney Maeghan Maloney as saying the injuries came to light when Peaslee was stopped for running a stop sign while trying to get help.

Authorities say Peaslee and his girlfriend, who is the baby's mother, have been living with his parents in Windsor. A judge set bail at $25,000 cash or a property worth $50,000.
