PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Thousand of flights have been canceled around the country due to ice and snow.

At the Portland Jetport, almost all flights were canceled on Thursday with the exception of departues to Detroit and Chicago. By mid-morning, the Atlanta airport was back online.

"What ends up happening is aircrafts can't take off without all of the snow and ice removed," says the Jetport Director, Paul Bradbury. "And it does take some time for the airlines to get back online. Usually it's all back to normal within 24 hours of an event like this."

The Jetport Director says because of fewer flights and fast maintenance crews, weather events affect the Jetport less than busier airports.

As this storm system moves into Maine and those major airports get back online, flights from the Portland Jetport are expected to depart on-time while this storm is in Maine.
