PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A female inmate left her cell Saturday afternoon for a "pre arranged" encounter with a male inmate at the Cumberland County Jail.
According to Sheriff Joyce, the female put a note on her door saying that she didn't feel well and didn't want her afternoon medication. The inmate also stuffed pillows and blankets into her bed to make it seem like she was sleeping.
She then snuck into a male inmate's cell. The two were in his cell for three hours before being caught.
In a press conference, jail officials said they believe the two could talk through the air ducts and had set up a plan to meet for sex. They're unsure how the female inmate was able to sneak by the guards, but admit the jail was never built for separate male and female populations.
