PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- You tune into NEWS CENTER to find out what's going on in your state. In Presque Isle there's a place on Main Street known for also being a source for news.
Dwight Helstrom opened Dwight's Barber shop in 1966. Fifty years later he's become a staple on Presque Isle's Main Street cutting five generations worth of some families hair. His customers span from Eagle Lake south to Yarmouth. Daniel Stewart of Presque Isle started getting his hair cut by Helstrom in 1967 when he was in High School.
"Dwight's always got a few stories. We talk politics, city council, business," said Stewart. "This is the place to hear all the latest news."
The counter tops at Dwight's Barbershop have an extra amount of decorations with cards and flowers from customers congratulating the owner on his 50 year accomplishment. When asked how much longer he plans on cutting hair, his answer was a quick one.
"As long as it stays fun," said Helstrom. "I tell people when I wake up in the morning and it's not fun to come to work anymore I'm going to consider quitting, but I've never had that feeling."
Dwight's Barber shop is located at 400 Main Street in Presque Isle and is open Tuesday to Saturday. Hair cuts cost $12, up slightly from the $1.25 he charged when he opened in 1966.
