Jigsaw puzzlemaker Jay Hollis

Jigsaw puzzlemaker Jay Hollis

Jay Hollis is one of very few artisans working in America who still carve jigsaw puzzles freehand.

Hollis, who is an architect in his day job, picked up the skill as a hobby some time ago. He now makes the puzzles under the name Bogarts' Wooden Jigsaw Puzzles.

He commissions local artists for the designs and then prints the works onto mahogany plywood boards. Then he cuts everything freehand, including pieces called "whimsies" that can be just about any shape you want.

The Bush family has seven of Hollis' puzzles.
