EMAIL SCAM ALERT: Someone paid me to kill you

AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - - The Augusta Police Department are warning residents about a scary e-mail scam being used to extort money from people. 

Augusta Police said they were contacted Wednesday by a resident who received one of these  e-mails.

According to police,  the e-mail was that someone was paying the person to kill them and unless they paid the scammer, they would follow through with the contract. 

 This is an attempt at getting money or other useful personal information. The scam has been around for almost 10 years or more and circulates via text or e-mail, according to officials. 

Police said do not respond to this e-mail.  Report it to your local police and to the FBI scam website at www.ic3.gov
