Local kennel raising money for domestic violence shelters

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- For pet owners in domestic violence situations, it is often difficult to leave because it means leaving behind their beloved pets. A kennel in Bangor is fundraising to help pet owners in domestic violence situations.

Green Acres Kennel Shop in Bangor is raising money for "BARKK to end the silence of domestic violence" which was initiated by the "Paw It Forward Foundation". It will help local shelters set up pet-friendly rooms where victims of domestic violence can stay safely.

"It would be a facility were the family could actually go with the pet and stay there because they want to keep the pets and the families together," said co-owner of Green Acres Don Hanson.

Staff said the shelters will need a minimum of $10,000 to make the improvements. Hanson said it hopes the community will raise $500 and Green Acres will match it with another $500. BARKK to End the Silence is hosting a 5K Walk on Saturday, September 27 at the Bangor Waterfront.
