Clown sighting in Orono raise concerns for residents

Creepy clown sightings near UMaine campus

ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Police responded to the report of a clown sighting Monday night at The Reserve apartment complex.

They did not believe there was any threat to the public.

Clown sightings have been popping up all over the country and it is usually a harmless prankster, but the sightings have raised some concern for people. Police said that they are treating the matter like they would any other suspicious persons incident.

"Doesn't matter if they are wearing a clown suit or not, if someone is acting suspicious, we want a call," Orono Police Chief Josh Ewing said. "If somebody is lurking around buildings, if someone is peaking in windows or hiding in the bushes, if they're just acting strangely, no matter what they are wearing, we would like a call."

Students at the University of Maine have mixed feelings on the recent clown sighting.

"My stomach kind of dropped. I'm really scared," said sophomore Molly Steinman. "I think it's really creepy, and I don't know why people are doing it.

"I was so paranoid last night that I went around the house and locked all the windows and the doors."

Some students wonder if it is just a harmless prank.

"I'm sure that if I saw a clown on campus at 3 a.m., I would probably run away because I don't like clowns either," said senior Christian Duncan said. "But at the same time, I don't know if it's actually a dangerous phenomenon or something else."

if you see a suspicious clown in the future and feel threatened contact your local police.
