PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- The cult classic television show, 'Gilmore Girls,' turned 16 on Wednesday. In honor of the birthday and it's upcoming return to TV, Netflix set up pop up Luke's Diner's from the show in cafe's across the country- including right here in Maine.
Coffee By Design on Diamond Street in Portland was transformed into the iconic setting from 7 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Wednesday morning. Baristas dressed in Luke's Diner aprons and hats while handing out free cups of coffee with a label of the same theme. Coffee drinkers could even collect a Snap Chat code on the cup for a special Gilmore Girls filter on the app. To many visitors, the event meant much more than a free cup of coffee.
"My family really came together over this show, especially during some tough stuff," said long time fan of 'Gilmore Girls,' Emily Lusenhop. "So, they are actually around the country right now waiting to open their own little Luke's Diner, and we're all on FaceTime trying to share it together."
The event may be over, but there is still plenty of witty banter and mother, daughter adventures to be had when Gilmore Girls returns with four brand new 90 minute shows on Netflix November 25th.
