Community raises money for Gardiner homicide victim

GARDINER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The community of Gardiner is coming together to raise money for the man allegedly killed by his son this week.

Police believe Leroy Smith II was killed by his son, Leroy Smith III, on Saturday, May 3. The court affidavit released Thursday described details Leroy Smith III told investigators about his father's murder in the apartment they shared on Cannard Street in Gardiner.

Leroy Smith II's nephew Devin Smith works at Red Barn Restaurant. Red Barn Restaurant's owner Laura Benedict has set up a fundraising page on to raise money for the elder Smith's funeral. Benedict has done other fundraising in the community for mental health awareness, a cause she actively supports.

"There are people out there who need help, who can't be ashamed to feel alone and desperate," Benedict said.

Devin Smith told NEWS CENTER his uncle was a person who had a lot of friends and he loved to laugh. He said the younger Leroy Smith spent most of his life in Massachusetts, and arrived in Maine a short time ago. He said he is thankful that so many people have shown their support.

"It proves how people can come to one and make something happen and I can't thank them enough. It does make it a lot easier on us that we don't have to worry about expenses," Devin Smith said.

In just two days, almost $5,000 have been raised on the gofundme website:
