Cyclists ride 180 miles to fight lung disease

BELFAST, MAINE (NEWS CENTER) - More than 1,000 cyclists from all over Maine took part in a nearly 200 mile trip from Sunday River to Belfast, and all in the name of fighting lung disease.

The 33rd Annual Trek Across Maine took place over the weekend. From Friday to Sunday cyclists braved a grueling ride to help raise money for the American Lung Association.

Many riders rode in remembrance of a loved one.

Betty Decker, of Bucksport, rode for the first time this year. Decker did so in honor of her mother who  passed away a few years ago from lung cancer.

"The hills were nothing compared to what she went through. So she gave me strength to get through everyday," Decker said.

The event has raised more than $26 million over the last 33 years.
