Firefighters battle blaze at Dresden drug recovery center

13 people displaced after building fire

DRESDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Thirteen people are displaced after an early morning fire at the Freedom Center Transitional Housing Complex in Dresden.

All 13 people living at the Freedom Center made it out safely before fire crews arrived thanks to working smoke detectors - however, one dog died in the fire.

Officials got the call around 3:30 AM.

They say that the biggest challenge was water sources and manpower.

Dresden Fire, a volunteer department, had to call 10 mutual aid departments for help - they say that this is an ongoing problem because of a shortage of firefighters in the area.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Residents are happy to be alive - but unsure of what to do without any of their belongings.

“Scared and sad. All our stuff was in there,” said resident George Brown as he described evacuating during the fire. “I had no socks and shoes or anything on my feet.”

Firefighters assume the building is a total loss.

The Red Cross has found places for the residents to stay in the meantime.
