Friends, neighbors of Belfast shooting victims speak out

BELFAST, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- News of a shooting Wednesday night that left one woman dead and her son critically injuredspread quickly throughout the city on Thursday.Many friends and neighbors of Lynn Arsenault and her son Matt Day said the couldn'toffer an explanation as towhy anyone would want to do them harm.

Joseph Mitchell and his wife Angela live right next door from where the shooting took placeat 162 Waldo Avenue. State police say 44-year-old Todd Gilday of Belfast forced his way into the home sometime before 11 p.m. Wednesday and fatally shot Arsenault before shooting Day and then leaving.

The Mitchells sayArsenault used to live in the home full time but in recent years moved out andwould just stop in and check on her kids during the week. The Mitchells and other residents of Waldo Avenue say the house where the shooting took placewas known to be a 'party home' on the street.Neighbors say it would produce complaints for noise, drinking and drug activity.

Many friends of Matt Day who did not want to go on a camera on Thursday said the young man has been struggling with drug addiction over the years. Lynn Arsenault was employed in Belfast as a team leader at Bank of America.

Angela Mitchell says she used to work with Arsenault. The couple said they couldn't have been more surprisedWednesday night when they heard gunshots.

"We heard a pop and then a scream," said Joseph Mitchell, "lady said something and then another pop and that was it...and I called 911 because I knew that wasn't a normal sound."

Neither neighbors nor friends of the victims could offer any explanation as to why they were targeted in this shooting. According to LinkedIn, Todd Gilday is a tax examiner with Maine Revenue Services and owner of Spinnaker Financial LLC.Officials in the clerks office forWaldo County Superior Courtsaid he has no criminal history in that county.

Court records also show that Lynn Arsenault filed a protection from abuse order against her then husband Robert Day in 2002. The couple filed for divorce that same year.
