Inmate escapes from Reentry Center, leaves apology note

BELFAST, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Waldo County Sheriff's Office said an inmate escaped from the Maine Coastal Regional Reentry Center Thursday.

Tyler Malmstrom, 23, was able to escape from the recreation yard shortly before 9:00 p.m. Waldo County Sheriff said the Reentry Center had recently admitted Malstrom to complete the last five months of his sentence for an aggravated assault charge. He was charged in relation to a bar fight in Knox County. Malmstrom left a note behind apologizing to the staff of Waldo and Knox Counties, as well as the courts and his family for his actions.

Officials do not believe Malstrom is armed and dangerous or a threat to the community. However, the Sherriff's office asks that if anybody sees Malstrom or knows of his whereabouts to contact the Waldo County Sheriff's Office at 338-6786 or the Knox County Sheriff's Office at 594-0429.

Malmstrom is described as a male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches in height, weighing 170 lbs with brown hair and blue eyes. A team of investigators from the Waldo and Knox County Sheriff's is working on the case.
